As Old As Civilization -Probiotics

The science and advantages of probiotics are nearly as old as civilization. The pre-Socratic philosopher Thales wrote in the second century BCE that the Thracians, a mysterious people mentioned in Homer’s Iliad, lived to be more than a hundred years old by virtue of their understanding of the bacterias of the stomach and that their warriors were strong and fearsome because they ingested fermented milk before battles. Though the Thracians may not have fully understood the science, they were onto something that remains as true today as it was then, certain bacterias of the gut are instrumental in good health and longevity and the way we come by these good bacterias in the contemporary world is through the ingestion of probiotics.

There are more than 700 different bacterial types living in the human body and the greater their diversity the better it is for their host, us. They have a positive impact on every aspect of human health from stress to depression to blood sugar levels to aging to digestion. And in a modern world filled with various contaminants and toxins they provide an exceptional defense, reinforcing your immune system while protecting you from autoimmune dysfunction. And I haven’t even mentioned how great they are for the skin. As reported in Life Extention Magazine ” Scientists have discovered that disruption of the balance between good and bad bacteria in the gut contributes to the development of chronic conditions such as autoimmune disorders, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, obesity, and more.”

I take a probiotic every morning to ensure a healthy gut and if I find myself taking antibiotics (something that rarely happens) I will make sure to take my probiotic two hours apart from the antibiotic until I’ve finished the regimen, then I’ll take a probiotic twice daily for another week afterward to restore the bacteria to my stomach and then go back to once per day after that.

I recommend taking a probiotic supplement every day—even on the days I am able to eat fermented foods like yogurt, sauerkraut, or some pickled foods I still take my regular dose and I’d suggest you should, too. The brand I use and like is Dr. Ohhira’s original formula, it contains 12 synergistic strains of probiotics, it is non-GMO. dairy free, vegetarian and it doesn’t need to be refrigerated. Great for traveling.
